District Literacy Council Seeks New Members to Safeguard Student Reading Rights

The District Literacy Council is now accepting applications for its 2025–26 term. This volunteer body plays a vital role in reviewing challenged or contested reading materials, ensuring that all students have fair and appropriate access to literature in our schools.

What the Council Does
When a parent, teacher or community member raises concerns about a book or reading resource used in classrooms, the Literacy Council steps in. Members examine the material in question, weigh its educational value against objections, and recommend whether it should remain in the curriculum, be relocated to a different grade level, or be withdrawn altogether. By carefully balancing individual concerns with students’ right to diverse viewpoints, the council helps maintain an inclusive learning environment.
